Author Interview Edge of Death

Standard

  1. How long have you been writing?

I started working on my first series, eleven years ago. It became my first series, the ‘Seaward Isle Saga.’ Since then, I’ve completed my second series, “The Chronicles of Eledon,’ and the ‘Admiralty Archives’ is my third series.

  1. I saw this book is the second part of a series. Can you tell us about this series? Do you have more books planned?

The series begins with my main character, Alex, who is part Elf, traveling to Earth to return a group of sailors back to London. In the second book, she begins to face the facts. She’s not allowed to go home to Eledon. She tries to adjust, taking a part time job to help a friend but she also encounters a series of threats to her life. There’s a hundred Rock Elves sent to kill her to make sure she never returns; two wizards who must kill her to stay alive, and a white supremacist group out to kill her benefactor, VADM Teller of the British Royal Navy, whom she swears to protect.

  1. What did you find most challenging about writing your book?

The most challenging part of this book was developing a villain behind the threats to Alex’s life. I came up with Hades, god of the Underworld. His goal is to kill Alex because of her Titan bloodline—her grandfather was a Titan. Once I brought in Hades, he pulled my story together into one plan with a motive—kill the Titan.

  1. Which aspect of writing do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy coming up with the story idea and bringing it to fruition. It’s a lot of work but I enjoy the process.

  1. Are you working on another book at the moment?

The next book in the series, ‘Call from Home,’ is with my editor right now. It should be ready for publication in July of next year, I hope. In this book, my main character, Alex, is still exiled on Earth but she keeps running across reminders her of home. When the reminders signal danger to her homeland of Eledon, she can’t stand by any longer and takes action.

About the Book

Title: Edge of Death: Book Two of the Admiralty Archives

Author: Joni Parker

Genre: Urban Fantasy

In this second installment of The Admiralty Archives, the warrior Lady Alexin, the Keeper of the Keys for the Elf realm of Eledon, finds herself exiled to the harsh world of near-future London. Rendered little more than a political pawn by the Elfin Council of Elders to avoid a war with the Rock Elves, she has little choice but to struggle to find her way in this strange new land. Taken under the protection of kindly mentors, Vice Admiral Malcolm Teller of the British Royal Navy and his wife, Alex brings all her skills to the fore as she uncovers a series of deadly plots.

Murder is on everyone’s mind as an underground White Supremacist organization takes aim at Admiral Teller while two wizards, resurrected from death, must kill Alex in order to survive. To make matters worse, the Rock Elves dispatch a hundred assassins from Eledon with their sole mission to bring Lady Alexin to the very… Edge of Death.

Book Excerpt

A short while later, Captain Jonas returned, accompanied by a middle-aged woman and a group of young sailors, male and female. The woman wore a mottled blue camouflage uniform and her blond hair was tucked under a dark blue cap with a brim and the name USS Lonestar emblazoned in gold.

“Alex, this is Captain Williams. She’ll take over…this place.” He grimaced as he looked around. “Captain Williams, I’ll check in later.” He nodded to her and marched out.

“Nice to meet you, Miss.” Captain Williams held out her hand.

Alex shook her hand and noticed the eagle pins on her collar. She was the same rank as Captain Jonas, equivalent to a Colonel, the rank of her foster father, Colonel Penser. “My name’s Alex. They allow women to be in charge of ships?”

The Captain’s smile grew. “Yep, sure do. Half my crew is female.” She winked. “The Captain disapproves.”

“I get the same reaction. Are you an American?” Alex’s smile broadened.

“Yes, ma’am, from Houston, Texas. Where’re you from?”

“I was born here, but my foster father’s from Texas. He’s a colonel and in charge of the Nyla Army Garrison. I thought I recognized your accent.”

“How long has he been here?”

“A long time. He said he was in a place called ‘Nam before.”

“You mean Vietnam?” The Captain rubbed her chin. “That was about sixty years ago.”

“Oh, he hasn’t been here that long.”

The woman paused, uncertain how to react and pressed her lips together. She turned to monitor the cleaning crew. “When was the last time this hospital was used?”

“We call it a healing house. I was here about three or four years ago. I guess no one’s needed it since.”

“What kind of equipment do you have? An X-ray machine?” She took notice of the bare walls. “What about electrical outlets? Running water?”

Alex shook her head. “We don’t have outlets for anything, but you can get water from the pump outside. We don’t have any kind of X equipment.”

“Uh, where exactly are we?”

“Seaward Isle. It’s part of Eledon, the Elf world. We haven’t had a shipwreck here in years and we just fixed the Elf grid to keep this from happening.”

Book Excerpt Hunted

Standard

Book Excerpt

A crack of thunder, followed by a wave of warped air, exploded out from my hand – ripping my fingers wide.

The pressure of the trick slammed into Cresh when he was only a few inches away. The counter-force of the magic pushed me back against the wall, threatening to knock me down; but I kept my balance. The drywall behind me fractured and buckled.

Cresh was struck, the force of the power stopping him in mid-air. Ripples of energy warped the air around the demon. The strength of the magic overwhelmed his momentum and held.

Growling in frustration, Cresh waited until the magic, gravity, and his inertia cancelled each other out. The force was quickly spent, and natural laws were reinstated. Cresh dropped to the ground, landing with unnatural grace.

The whole exchange did nothing but stop the demon from falling on top of me. Cresh stepped forward, completely unfazed, and reached out to take hold of me.

The familiar sensations of dread, nerves, and fear crept up my spine. I hated the part of me that fell so easily into fright – the human part. I had faced creatures best left unnamed, and every time I felt the fear. A fear I first experienced when confronted with death and eternal damnation.

The sense of impending doom threatened to overwhelm my will. I fought back, channeled my power into a single strike, and unleashed a torrent of magic upon the demon.

And I missed.

Book Excerpt

“What do you want to do to me?”

The question seemed to shock Luca somehow, the top of his sharp cheeks taking on the barest hint of cherry red. He seemed to give it some thought in the darkness of the dripping tunnel, “This time, when we do whatever we’re going to do, can you pretend…to love me.”

Peter halted. “What?”

“Don’t make it weird.”

Peter latched on to Luca’s arm and halted his purposeful march through the main chamber. “I’m not trying to make it weird. What did you say?”

“Pretend to love me this time. Despite being a shitty liar, you’re good at pretending. It shouldn’t be that hard for you to make me believe it.”

Peter squeezed his shoulder and turned him around so he could see his face, his stark features illuminated by the glowing blue pool of liquid. “You want to believe that I love you?”

“I want to know what it feels like…” His eyebrows knitted. “I keep thinking about Avaline. How much she must’ve loved him to turn her afterlife into this forest. A tree for every tear. I want to know what she was crying over.” Something about Peter’s expression triggered Luca’s defenses, and he spun around. “Forget it.”

“Stop,” Peter snapped with a vehemence that left his voice echoing in surrounding caverns.

Luca halted, but didn’t face him, head tilted to the side. “What?”

“Didn’t Lydia love you? Didn’t Chief love you?”

“I don’t think that’s the right kind of love.”

“What you asked for…” I don’t have to pretend. “Stay here. I’ll be back.”

 “Where are you going?”

“To get rope.”

Book Excerpt

There was a tremble in Nathan’s hands when he first reached for the hem of Sasha’s shirt. He wasn’t desperate for oblivion like he had been the night he left the Gatehouse, but he did want and need with enough urgency that he was shaking.

“Nathan,” Sasha whispered against his lips, warm hands reaching down to take Nathan’s and still his trembling. Sasha helped him then, he didn’t push Nathan’s hands away, just guided them, lifting the T-shirt up his body until it was off. “It’s okay,” the shirt fell to the floor and Sasha reached for Nathan’s face with both hands, “I love you. Nothing’s ever going to change that.”

Another kiss, just as new, like breathing, like coming up out of deep water and breathing again for the first time. Nathan didn’t even realize at first that he had started to back Sasha toward the bed. It was instinct, moving for a comfortable surface so this could be easier, so he didn’t have to struggle to stay standing when his knees were weak.

Sasha smiled when they neared the bed, pulling back and lowering himself onto it with nothing but trust on his face, and love, and encouragement.

Nathan didn’t hesitate. He sunk right down into Sasha, kissing again, touching the pads of his fingers to the smooth skin of Sasha’s chest. It felt so natural, even as it was fresh, and new, and different. It didn’t feel rushed or wrong like Nathan had feared. Dave had taken the shadow from Nathan’s heart, and though it wasn’t yet bathed in light, it knew how to turn toward it and seek the light out.

Nathan’s over-shirt was pushed down his arms, his T-shirt pulled up over his head and tossed away, leaving both of them only in jeans. They scooted up the bed as they kissed, smiling throughout it all like they almost couldn’t believe they could have this again.

It had been three weeks at least, close to four, since the last time they were together long enough for Sasha to feed. Sasha had to need this more than he was letting show, and Nathan had to wonder what the incubus would have done if he had been in the Veil for longer than a week’s time on Earth.

They shared a smile as they came up for air, but Nathan wasn’t sure what to do next. Well, he knew what to do. It was just difficult to undress Sasha the rest of the way when his hands were shaking.

Book Excerpt

The wan light of the full moon was blocked by the canyon and although I’d never been afraid of the darkness, fear was clawing its way around my ribs. I found myself jogging instead of walking, urging myself to the desert on the other side of the long tunnel. It seemed like a far longer stretch than it had when the sun was up. The scarlet and gold of the rock had been leeched away, and now was the deepest shades of indigo and blue and slate gray. When I finally escaped the darkness I’d been hidden in, I was relieved to see the face of the moon, slightly smaller now that it had risen from the desert floor. Not sure of how far it was to Enoch’s cabin, I kept jogging, turning around every few yards, to look back and see how far I’d come, expecting the house to be there before me every time I turned back. But it never showed up. I was certain I had run farther than before, and yet the house was still nowhere in sight. How long did I keep running, the spirits dogging my steps, before I gave up?

Afraid I would lose sight of the canyon and find myself lost in the desert, I made the hard decision to give up. Once more, I turned around and stared at the dark opening of the tunnel, so far off that it was only a pinprick of black in the shifting shadows of the rock around it. My feet were heavy to lift, weighted by the fear that I’d never find my family, the worry that something had happened to them while I was gone. I couldn’t run this time, there was nothing to run back to. There was only the moon, the crickets, the spirits, and the rock monuments that stretched toward the desert sky. My heart was torn between fear and rage and I didn’t have any idea which emotion to feel.

Book Excerpt

He didn’t say anything as I turned and walked downstairs. I kept expecting him to call out to me, or come grab me again. Part of me wished he would, I guess, but he didn’t so it was irrelevant. The front door was bolted four times, but I got it open and walked out. It was night now, or mostly night—the sky wasn’t black yet, or the orangish tint the sky gets in the city at night, but was instead the indigo glow that comes just after sunset. The air was warm and muggy, and June bugs buzzed around the street light at the corner. It was dark here, though, and I walked a few yards down the cracked and busted sidewalk before sitting down on the curb between Daniel’s house and the next. Other than the brief time today between car and building, it had been a long time since I sat outside in complete freedom. Daniel had said he wouldn’t let me go, but I knew if I decided to walk away and leave he wouldn’t stop me. It was in the way he looked at me, that constant sad apology in his eyes since the day I met him. I reached down and started picking dandelion leaves out of a crack in the curb, tearing one up and then picking another, like I was playing ‘he loves me, he loves me not’, although without petals and without romance. It was more like ‘she walks away, she walks away not’. I turned and looked back at the crumbling old house behind me; Daniel was standing upstairs by one of the windows. He must have been looking out at me, but now he just leaned with his forehead against it, looking downward. I was so angry at everything that was happening, had happened, I couldn’t think of anything else but leaving. But every time I started formulating a plan to get out of here, thought of looking into those amber-hued eyes and telling Daniel to fuck off and leave me alone for good, my heart clenched up and the lump in my throat returned. I had named my son, our son, after him and I didn’t even remember him or know who he was. My feelings for him must have been pretty substantial once. Even in the life I remembered I couldn’t recall ever having felt something so earth-moving. I pulled my knees in toward my chest and wrapped my arms around my legs, resting my forehead on my kneecaps. I wasn’t going to be able to make myself leave.

The world is a pretty straightforward place. Even for medium Sara Stone things seem pretty simple, aside from the whole talking to spirits bit. But when the spirits get too hard to handle and Sara ends up admitted to a mental hospital, the world starts to seem a lot less straightforward. First her family disappears, including her four year old son. Then she gets the sneaking suspicion that not only are the staff at the mental hospital somehow connected, but they also have no intention of ever letting her leave the hospital.

Everything changes when Sara has her first visitor in three months. Daniel is handsome, friendly, and a complete stranger. When he promises to spring her from the hospital and swears that everything she’s experienced is completely real, Sara has no choice but to believe him. But once she reaches a run-down Victorian house in the tiny Alabama town her rescuer calls home, the last thing she expects to discover is that every memory she has is a lie.

Daniel reveals a world filled with angels, demons, and an impending war humans know nothing about. Guest Post

I get asked a lot of questions as a writer; the most common is “where do you get your ideas?” but coming in a close second is: “who’s in charge, the character or the author?”
As the author of a deeply-flawed protagonist, I’m compelled to dig pretty deep into the crudpuddle of humanity to get my head around some of her knee-jerk reactions. Many writers will tell you, sometimes a character shocks the hell out of her author. My main character, Marnie Baranuik, is an ex-pro psychic, cookie addict and the reluctant guardian of a fussypants vampire named Lord Guy Harrick Dreppenstedt. Marnie’s more Mr. Magoo than MacGyver, is under no illusions about it and makes no apologies for it. I try to make her more heroic, I really do, but it never feels right. And every day, she manages to make me choke a little on my tongue.  (Side-note: I’m wondering if there’s a measurable relationship between author’s caffeine intake and character’s use of the word “fuckspigot”. Will investigate presently.)
I’ll sit down to write a triumphant scene of her kicking evil in the gonads, and mentally I’ll tell this character: “OK, Marnie, bust that shit open and drop his ass!” But by the time I’m done the scene, she’s managed a brief, screaming trip down a hill on a stolen motorcycle and executed a textbook face-plant into a hedge. The bad guy is dead, but only because she accidentally plowed through him. She did have a fist-fight. It was with a shrub. This does not in any way resemble the mission I sent her on.
Could I backspace over it and try again? Force the character to my will? I absolutely could. Would it play out better that way? No. I don’t think so. And so, most of the time, I let Marnie Baranuik have the reigns. God help us all.

About The Book

Last-Impressions-CoverTitle: Last Impressions (The Marnie Baranuik Files #3)

Author: A.J. Aalto

Genre: Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy

When an FBI Internal Affairs investigation lands the Preternatural Crimes Unit in a bureaucratic spank-fest, it feels like the perfect time for Marnie Baranuik to skip town and lend her expertise to a bear-sized Canadian cop who doesn’t want her help with his case, his love life, or his car stereo. Back in her childhood stomping grounds, Marnie leaps into action, facing an exorcist in skinny jeans, a slap-happy specter, and an old friend up to new tricks. Are ghosts behind a string of unusual deaths? Why didn’t her revenant companion, Lord Harry Dreppenstedt, tell her he had a Combat Butler? Can she survive dinner with her parents? With a shifty man of the cloth offering her soul’s redemption, and a revelation that could change the future of her love life, she has her gloved hands full. She may not make a great first impression, but no one makes a Last Impression quite like Marnie.

Author Bio

AJ Aalto is the author of the paranormal mystery series The Marnie Baranuik Files. Aalto is an unrepentant liar and a writer of  blathering nonsense offset by factual gore. When not working on her novels, you can find her singing Monty Python songs in the shower, eavesdropping on perfect strangers, stalking her eye doctor, or failing at one of her fruitless hobbies. Generally a fan of anyone with a passion for the ridiculous, she has a weak spot for smug pseudo-intellectuals and narcissistic jerks; readers will find her work littered with flawed monsters and oodles of snark.

AJ cannot say no to a Snickers bar and has been known to swallow her gum.
