Excerpt – The Mission

As the cats waited patiently for their treats, Brittany leaned over to her sister and whispered, “Lace, I have to go out to the woodshed later and meet Nathanial, Henry, and a coyote named Eva.

“It turns out the wild pack of dogs Henry let out of the abandoned house are still roaming the area. We now know they are controlled by the ‘pet store guy’. He feeds and houses them so they do his bidding.”

“What’s bidding, Britt?” asked the pretty white kitten.”

“It means the dogs do whatever he asks. The man feeds and houses the dogs, and in return they kidnap innocent animals for him to sell.”

“Can I go with you?” asked Lace, already knowing what the answer would be.

“Not this time. The weather may be bad. It’s just supposed to be a quick meeting. A plan is being put into place to deal with the ‘pet store guy’ and the pack of dogs. I haven’t been told any details. All I know is they want me to be part of it. That’s what I’m going to find out tonight.

“Wow, isn’t that dangerous? I’m scared for you, Brittany.”

“I am too, kiddo. I’ve never done anything this serious before,” Britt answered and let out a deep sigh, wondering what she was going to be asked to do.

Lace instinctively hissed and puffed out. Her tail bushed and swished back and forth. “No, don’t do it. I have a bad feeling. Stay out of this pleeease, Britt. Let someone else do it. Let Henry do it! He caused this when he let the dogs out. I want you safe!” The kitten hissed. Lace had once again doubled in size and now weighed close to four pounds. She was still sweet, but was also turning into a strong, fierce, young cat.

Author Interview Redfern Book Tour

Standard

Q: How long have you been writing?

A: I’ve been writing since about the age of twelve or thirteen, but I haven’t always finished what I started and my writing wasn’t always as developed as it is now. The last fifteen years or so have seen me take a leap forward and even make some headway in competitions. I finally decided to write a book in 2011 which I published as ‘Threshold Shift’ on Amazon and then Hunter No More’ followed in 2014, initially under a publisher and then by me again. Finally I published ‘Redfern’ in 2016. It’s safe to say I don’t writing easy, but I do find it rewarding.

Q: Is this book part of a series?

A: None of my books form part of a series but there is a loose linking theme of being set in the same universe with an emerging future history. The AIs have taken over the Earth and human beings are colonising other planets under the supervision of the AI Hierarchy. I do pose questions about how ‘Machine Minds’ progress and deal with humanity but I also have a few alien species in the mix as well. Overriding everything is just the desire to create a good thriller that will keep the reader interested in the characters and invested in the story.

Q: What did you find the most challenging about writing your book?

A: Just getting down the first draft, which is proving more difficult as time goes on because I have a young family which takes precedence. Once the first draft is done, no matter how long it takes, the real nitty gritty is in the rewrites and the editing where the story can really be pounded into shape. That’s where you can really work on the form and the style and correct what are probably a multiple of mistakes, word omissions and remove all the flowery writing I do when I think I’m being clever.

Q: Which aspect of writing do you enjoy the most?

A: Definitely not the first draft. What I enjoy the most is when the characters begin speaking and acting for themselves and the story tells itself. There always come a point where the novel has a life of its own and you don’t know where it’s going, you’re just riding it and waiting to see where you go. That’s the exciting part about writing a novel. You start with a plot but inevitably the people inhabiting your creation have ideas of their own.

Q: Do you have any works in progress?

A: I have an idea for a new sci fi novel still set in my future history but exploring a different aspect of alien life. I also have an idea for a more earthbound novella, but we’ll see what happens. Like I said before, first drafts are hard, but I think once you write that first book, you know you can do it, and no matter how long it takes, it will get done.

About the Book

Title: Redfern

Author: Gary Tinnams

Genre: Science Fiction

“Humans don’t project past their own frequency. It’s why you’re so isolated as a species. The beings of other frequencies can only witness what you build and feel what you destroy.”

Earth – Tomorrow – The Singularity:-

The machines have taken over and mankind is cast out.

Millennia later, the inhospitable planet of Redfern is in the process of being made habitable for the proposed rebirth of the entire human race. All is proceeding as planned until Enforcer, Ted Holloway, witnesses the unexpected appearance of a long dead and former friend – A man who can become invisible and immaterial, a man that can penetrate any and all security.

A man whose very existence should be impossible.

As Ted and his superior, Lisa Carmichael, investigate further, they face dangers and creatures that challenge their very concept of reality and also encounter the colony’s caretaker Machine Mind and the human Security Commissioner, both of whom have opposing and intricate agendas of their own.

For the true nature of Redfern is stranger and more deadly than anything Holloway or Carmichael can possibly imagine.

And it could change or destroy humanity forever…

Author Bio

I have been reading and watching science fiction since I was old enough to watch Peter Davison walking around an unrealistic jungle set in Doctor Who. The first set of sci-fi books I ever read was The Tripods trilogy by John Christopher without ever having watched the resultant TV series. The Tripods were scary.

Over the years I’ve come to love a variety of science fiction and fantasy books from many different eras and so came to the conclusion that I wanted to create my own adventures, set in my own worlds, with characters that acted and felt like real people. My third novel ‘Redfern’ is an adventure story which poses question about alien first contact, artificial intelligence, the singularity and the continued survival of our species at any cost.

“If you love your science fiction on the cinematic side but also want big ideas, intelligently explored, look no further.”

KATA MLEK

UNCOMFORTABLY REAL FICTION

I began my writing career in 2012 after leaving the IT industry. In Poland, I’ve had several successful novels published by traditional publishers. In 2015, I made the decision to switch to self-publishing and start my international career.

In 2015, I published the English edition of my intense psychological thriller Absolute Sunset. This was one of the most talked-about books in Poland in 2012, and the English edition has been equally well-received.

In 2016, I published One God—a trilogy of techno-thrillers about corporate control of genetic modifications. Originally published in Polish as a single long novel, the English version was expanded and re-written to create a trilogy with lots of great new scenes.

Now I’m working on another psychological thriller, a brand-new story written directly in English for my English readers.

All of my books cross genres—I like to experiment with different styles to create the effect I want, and to give my readers a unique experience. My Polish background gives me a different perspective and makes my writing fresh, although I feel it’s still accessible—inside we’re all the same, after all.

Book Excerpt The Agartes Epilogues

Book Excerpt

“I am Agartes Allaicras. I do not let minor details escape me. I saw the rest of them, didn’t I? She called me, spoke to me. Yet Urthen told me she was dead hours before I got there. What did she die of, ka-eng? Tell me, if you know so much.”

“She was cut down, like the others.”

“She was whole. I saw.”

“Perhaps.” The ka-eng paused. “Her soul may have hung back, waited for you. They are allowed to do that sometimes. You saw her spirit.”

“I felt her in my arms.”

“You must have held her before. You were remembering, but you had one foot stepping into the other plane. One does not forget the taste of water or the smell of air.”

His eye stung. He stubbornly wiped it and looked up at the sky. “I hope you’re right,” he murmured.

“My master Goche says that you possess a strong connection to the agan. Have you not had other such experiences in your youth? Seen things or manipulated elements you otherwise shouldn’t have?”

“When I met Goche twenty-five years ago, at the ridge near Vildar, some things did happen. But I’ve always thought it was him all along. He wanted to make a hero out of me and got that. So forgive me if I am more suspicious of him than I normally am.”

“He wants nothing, hero, but what he has always wanted—peace throughout our land. Believe me. That I came at such an unfortunate time…”

Agartes snorted. “Unfortunate? You have a funny way of expressing yourself.”

“I apologize.”

Ka-eng, I don’t have time for this. I need to find my sword and sharpen it. I have an arrogant Dageian king to kill and no reason to hold back any longer. If I am alive by the end of this war, come to me. Maybe I’ll have time to entertain you then.”

“Goche tells me that if you do not control your agan, it can wreak havoc through the land. He knows everything that has been happening here. He has heard of what you were planning. You speak of winning. If that happens, then good. But you have seen Dageian handiwork in your own household. Their arts cannot be met by sword alone and we do not want their presence in the Kag anymore than you do.”

“Piss on that.”

“Ajy…”

Nobody else knew the name his mother gave him and he had not heard it in years. He looked up with a start.

“This agan…” he began, his mind turning. Reaching.  He tried to remember what his mother’s hair smelled like, realized he couldn’t. He couldn’t even remember her face. He could still hear the laughter in the courtyard, could still remember the timbre in Aldeti’s viol and the way the candles flickered each time he kissed them good-night.  One never forgets the taste of water or the smell of air. But water and air is…only water and air. He could remember the feel of his infant child in his arms twelve years ago, but could he hold on to everything for the rest of his life? They were all irrevocably behind him, now.

About the Books

Author: K.S. Villoso

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Jaeth’s Eye

It has been years since his brother’s accident. Kefier was only just beginning to live a normal life–at least, as normal as it could get for a mercenary from a run-down town. And then an errand goes wrong and he finds himself holding his friend’s bloody corpse. Already once branded a murderer, he is pursued by men he once considered friends and stumbles into the midst of a war between two mages. One bears a name long forgotten in legend; the other is young, arrogant Ylir, who takes special interest in making sure Kefier is not killed by his associates. The apex of their rivalry: a terrible creature with one eye, cast from the womb of a witch, with powers so immense whoever possesses it holds the power to bring the continent to its knees.

Now begins a tale with roots reaching beyond the end of another. Here, a father swears vengeance for his slain children; there, a peasant girl struggles to feed her family. A wayward prince finds his way home and a continent is about to be torn asunder. And Kefier is only beginning to understand how it all began the moment he stood on that cliff and watched his brother fall…

Aina’s Breath

Enosh, apprentice to one of the richest merchants in the Kag, is secretly heir to a broken line of mages. Because of The Empire of Dageis’ quest for sources of the agan–the life-source that mages use for power–his people have been reduced to scavengers, his culture diminished to a speck in the wind. For more than ten years, he has helped raise a conjured beast to use as a weapon against the Dageians. But Enosh’s plans are falling apart. A powerful enemy has escaped and Enosh needs to capture him before he reaches Dageis. His quest is further complicated after he finds himself used as a pawn by Gasparian nobles.

On the other end of the continent, Sume, daughter to a Jin-Sayeng hero, must return to her roots to save her country and bring honour to her father’s name. To do this, she must befriend a prince and understand the terrible, corrupting nature of power and the reason her father was driven to walk away from it all those years ago…

Meanwhile, Kefier, Enosh’s agan-blind brother, is forced back into a life of violence. As he struggles with the notion that hands, once bloodied, never stay clean for long, he finds himself occupied with an unexpected burden: his own brother’s daughter.

Sapphire’s Flight

The battle at Shi-uin has left scars. The rise of Gorrhen yn Garr to power seems unstoppable. As nations fall, the lines between love and duty become blurred and Kefier, Sume, and Enosh must learn to live with the choices they have made.
