Guest Post

Fantasy has been one of my favorite genres for years. Nearly ten years ago, I started reading the Harry Potter series. I read them out of order, because I have already seen the movies in order at the time. One of my favorite elements of fantasy is magic and the freedom to create things that don’t exist in real life.

Due to some people saying that a lot of classic fantasy elements are clichéd, I like to make up my own fantastic creatures and other entities. If I do use something that has been done many times before, I like to change certain things to make them more unique. For example, with wizards in my work, they are much more modern than in other works and they even use technology more advanced than ours. While the idea of wizards using modern technology has been done before, I don’t think it has been done enough to be considered clichéd. Another example of something I’ve changed was that the antagonist in my book, Wizardry Goes Wild, is a skeleton, but not a wicked cackling skeleton with a scythe. Rather, he is depressed, has a long history of being feared and misunderstood, and wants to be human real badly. I don’t know of any other stories like that.

Although I haven’t read a lot of modern-style fantasy books, I still enjoy how other authors write their versions of the fantasy genre.

About the Book

Closer To Sin FINALTitle: Closer to Sin

Author: Elizabeth Squire

Genre: Historical Romance

Elizabeth Squire brings a fresh voice to historical romance in this tale of intrigue and passion.

CLOSER TO SIN

Liliane Desailly travels to Napoleonic France after receiving a plea for help from her French cousin. She learns she is the key to fulfilling her grandfather’s legacy, but to do so she must masquerade as a spy and courier secrets on behalf of the British Admiralty.

Sinclair Charlcroft is the British Admiralty’s last hope. Napoleon’s Grande Armée is poised to invade Britain, an English spy is missing and a traitor has infiltrated the Admiralty’s intelligence network.

Pursued by Napoleon’s agents, Liliane and Sinclair cannot reveal their true identities until they unlock the secrets of the legacy—and only then can they unlock the secrets in their hearts.

Author Bio

Elizabeth SquireElizabeth Squire’s love of writing romance couldn’t be further from the life she had carved out for herself. Raised in outback and rural Australia, Elizabeth was determined to live a life vibrant with passion, travel, adventure and discovery—other than the one she had already lived through the pages of the innumerable she read and loved. And so, turning her back on a life in the bush, she invested a lot of years chasing her dreams—she enjoyed a career as a commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy, and counts white-water rafting the Zambezi River, travelling by safari truck through Africa, and back-packing through Eastern Europe with her young family as just a few of her many adventures.

But amongst the adventure, the urge to write intensified as story lines and dialogue continued to materialise from the recesses of her mind. She finally accepted that the voices in her head were really characters enmeshed in the tumultuous Georgian and Regency periods, vying for life on paper.

After a nomadic lifestyle, Elizabeth has now settled into her own home and loves nothing better than bringing her passionate heroines and daring rakes to life. She lives with her own hero and one true love, two beautiful daughters and two delinquent miniature long-haired dachshunds. Closer to Sin is Elizabeth’s debut novel.

About the Book

One Night with Hemsworth1Title: One Night with Hemsworth

Author: Eden Finley

Genre: Romance

Cole Turner’s ex-wife is getting remarried. No amount of alcohol can drown that out, but taking home the hot brunette at the bar is a good enough distraction. That’s all Paige is meant to be—a distraction.

Paige Minor is too busy studying for her law degree and getting over a bad breakup to care about finding another boyfriend. All she wants is one night of careless fun with a complete stranger. Cole seems like the perfect candidate.

When Cole goes to pick up his son from his ex’s perfect house, with her perfect fiancé, and perfect new life, the last person he expects to see is Paige. She definitely shouldn’t be the one opening the door. As he stares at the person who was in his bed less than twenty-four hours earlier, a single thought occurs to him: I just slept with my ex’s new stepdaughter.

**********
One Night with Hemsworth is the first book in a series, but can be read as a standalone.

Author Bio

Eden Finely grew up near Brisbane in Qld, Australia. She’s a romance/erotica author by day, and Batman at night …
Okay, I’m not Batman, but I feel like I am. I have a cool secret name and everything.
I have several Young Adult works published under my real name. For this reason, I chose a pen name to write for this genre to keep them separate. Well that, and I don’t want my mother to read Eden’s books. Seriously, how freaking awkward would that be?

I’m a lover of reading and writing anything that involves romance, contemporary, paranormal, suspense, and YA. If I’m not spending time with my family, chances are I’ll have my laptop or kindle in my hand.

About the Book

OFFICIAL SCOOTER COVERTitle: Scooter Nation

Author: A.B. Funkhauser

Genre: Humor / Noir

Aging managing director Charlie Forsythe begins his work day with a phone call to Jocasta Binns, the unacknowledged illegitimate daughter of Weibigand Funeral Home founder Karl Heinz Sr. Alma Wurtz, a scooter bound sextenarian, community activist, and neighborhood pain in the ass is emptying her urine into the flower beds, killing the petunias. Jocasta cuts him off, reminding him that a staff meeting has been called. Charlie, silenced, is taken aback: he has had no prior input into the meeting and that, on its own, makes it sinister.

The second novel in the UNAPOLOGETIC LIVES series, SCOOTER NATION takes place two years after HEUER LOST AND FOUND. This time, funeral directors Scooter Creighton and Carla Moretto Salinger Blue take centre stage as they battle conflicting values, draconian city by-laws, a mendacious neighborhood gang bent on havoc, and a self absorbed fitness guru whose presence shines an unwanted light on their quiet Michigan neighborhood.

About the Author

11057719_545573888922951_730878223886852973_oToronto born author A.B. Funkhauser is a funeral director, classic car nut and wildlife enthusiast living in Ontario, Canada. Like most funeral directors, she is governed by a strong sense of altruism fueled by the belief that life chooses us and we not it. Her debut novel HEUER LOST AND FOUND, released in April 2015, examines the day to day workings of a funeral home and the people who staff it. Winner of the PREDITORS & EDITORS Reader’s Poll for Best Horror 2015, HEUER LOST AND FOUND is the first installment in Funkhauser’s UNAPOLOGETIC LIVES series. Her sophomore effort, SCOOTER NATION, is set for release March 13, 2016 through Solstice Publishing. A devotee of the gonzo style pioneered by the late Hunter S. Thompson, Funkhauser attempts to shine a light on difficult subjects by aid of humorous storytelling. “In gonzo, characters operate without filters which means they say and do the kinds of things we cannot in an ordered society. Results are often comic but, hopefully, instructive.”

Funkhauser is currently working on SHELL GAME, a contemporary “whodunnit” begun during NaNoWriMo 2015.

“Funny, quirky, and sooooo different.”

Author Interview Jordan and Justine’s Weekend Adventures for Wildlife Alliance

Standard

jordanjustinebanner

How long have you been writing?

I have been writing since I was 16. I started out one summer writing a screenplay and then I knew I had keep trying. I loved the creative aspect of it.

What was the most challenging part about writing Jordan & Justine’s Weekend Adventures for Wildlife Alliance?

Making sure the facts are straight. I think writing for a children’s audience in a fictional modality but still trying to teach something really stretched me in so many ways. I had to constantly think what I wanted to get across, was it interesting, was the dialogue true to a character at that age. And then where do you pull back. I had to learn when is enough, enough for a children’s audience.

What do you enjoy the most about being an author?

The connection to the audience.

Is this book part of a series?

How many books do you have planned in this series? Yes, this book is part of a series. There are 3 books in the series: Jordan & Justine’s Weekend Adventures for Wildlife Alliance, Jordan & Justine’s Weekend Adventures: Go Go Green, and Jordan & Justine’s Weekend Adventures: Plants Parts 1 & 2. The plants book also has a Spanish version Plantas Partes 1 y 2

Do you have any works in progress?

Yes I just finished a special ebook which takes the characters into a new adventures with domestic pets. And I am currently working on a book that has a special place in my heart where Jordan & Justine explore one particular endangered species. That one I will keep a surprise. Both are expected to release next year.

Guest Post Against the Grain

Standard

againstgrainbanner

Guest Post

Against the Grain started as a thought experiment. I had just finished my nonfiction book, Fire the Landscaper. A few chapters delved into cultural biases, herd behavior, and government propaganda. I found these topics fascinating, and it made me question whether our behavior and beliefs are really our own. If you ask someone if they think for themselves, the inevitable response will be, “Yes.” But do we? We wave an American flag in this country, but what if we were born and raised elsewhere? Would we be Christians if we grew up in Pakistan?

We are inundated with cultural bias and propaganda from birth. I wondered what a person would be like if he wasn’t. What if this person was raised by a philosophical caregiver that stressed the importance of thinking for himself and using logic and reason to make decisions? To do this, I created a primitive farm where Matt Moyer is homeschooled by his philosophical uncle.

I spent some time researching philosophy, sociology, and psychology to determine what an intelligent, philosophical teen would think of our world. Do people typically become religious, or are they born into it? Do people research every country on the globe and pick the best one, or do they wave the flag of their home country? Do people typically question the morality of government? Or do they put their hands over their hearts and sing the National Anthem? Do people question authority and laws? Or do they equate the law with morality?

With Against the Grain, I wanted to create an engaging narrative with a deeper meaning. I wanted to entertain and challenge the reader.

About the Book

Against the Grain E-CoverTitle: Against the Grain

Author: Phil Williams

Genre: Contemporary / Coming of Age / Political

A tyrannical high school principal.
A young anarchist with nothing left to lose.
One way or another, this place is goin’ down.

Matt Moyer is an orphaned teen growing up on a primitive farm in the Pennsylvania coal region. He’s homeschooled by his eccentric and philosophical great-uncle, who’s a stickler for logic, reason, and intellectual honesty. Despite his uncle’s reverence for veracity, inconsistencies arise regarding the old man’s shady past and the teen’s parents.

Through a harrowing sequence of events, Matt is forced to attend a public school. The feral teen finds it difficult to cope with the hypocrisy, propaganda, and misinformation that adults and children so readily accept. Faced with the possibility of expulsion, arrest, and ostracism, he must make a choice. Will he choose the easy lie or the hard truth?

Adult language and content.
