Book Review Cold Blooded

Cold_Blooded_Ebook_Updated(1).jpgTitle: Cold-Blooded

Author: Lisa Regan

Genre: Mystery / Thriller

Fourteen years ago, high school track star Sydney Adams was gunned down in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. The investigation yielded useless clues, and the case went cold. But homicide detective Augustus Knox never gave up on finding Sydney’s killer. Now, retired from the police force and with only months to live, he enlists the help of private investigator Jocelyn Rush to clear the case once and for all.

Armed with little more than a theory as to who murdered Sydney, Jocelyn tries to lure a killer into the open. But unraveling the mystery means facing off against a cunning psychopath whose ruthlessness knows no bounds. When more bodies start to pile up, Jocelyn has to decide just how far she’s willing to go to catch a cold-blooded killer.

Although I didn’t read the first book, it wasn’t necessary to enjoy this one. Fourteen years ago, Sydney Admans, a high school track star was gunned down. The clues were useless and the case went cold. Homicide detective Knox never gave up on finding the killer though. Now, he’s retired, and only has a few months left to live, and enlists the help of Jocelyn Rush, a private investigator, to help find Sydney’s killer.

I enjoyed the plot and suspense, and Jocelyn is an intriguing protagonist. Her characters are flawed but likeable, and her motivations are realistic. An excellent book that I’m sure all fans of the genre will enjoy.

Author Interview Confessions of a Punk Rocker

How long have you been writing?

For as long as I can remember. I attempted a novel for the first time in high school. It was terrible and I never finished it, but the fascination with crafting a story stuck. I completed my first novel in my early twenties (it was never published) and it was the first time I thought to myself that I’d actually pursue publishing. There’s this huge sense of accomplishment that goes along with completing a novel length story, and a rush that accompanies it…but then you realize how important honing your craft and editing becomes. Sometimes it takes a while to realize that just because you finished a story, it doesn’t mean it’s ready for the world to read. I completed two books, neither of which was publishable, but they were invaluable to me in learning how to craft a novel length story. It was after that I completed what would become my first published novel, Living Dead Girl. I joined a critique group, which really helped me tighten up my storytelling abilities and push it to a level where a publisher really would want it. I guess it’s just something I’ve always enjoyed.

What was the most challenging part about writing Confessions of a Punk Rocker?

I can’t think of any major challenges. This story really flowed for me. It begins before and overlaps some of my first novel Living Dead Girl, just from a different character’s perspective. So obviously I had to make sure timelines matched, and if I used the same scene in the different character’s perspective, make sure it was balanced between providing new information and accuracy. I didn’t want those scenes that overlapped to simply swap pronouns, so I had to sit back and really consider ‘what would Jack (the main character) be thinking in this situation’.

What is your favorite part of being an author?

I think just being able to create characters that come alive for other readers; stories that evoke some kind of emotion or thought.

This is a series: how many books are there in the series? Do you plan on writing more books in this series?

I have two other books out in this series. Confessions is sort of a prequel, although it does overlap book one. Living Dead Girl is book one, told by Jen, who is Jack’s love interest. Book two, Reaper Madness, alternates between Jen and Jack’s POV’s. As of now, I have two other books planned to wrap up this series. After that, I may do separate books and or series starring other secondary characters from this series.

Do you have any works in progress you’re working on?

I’m currently alternating between the next book in this series, tentatively titled Daughter of Fate and Misfortune and another completely unrelated novel.

The dead should stay dead…

Jack Norris has just lost his best friend—who also happened to be his band’s drummer—to a drunk driving accident. As he struggles to deal with the band’s uncertain future and his own personal demons, those issues soon become unimportant. His dead friend has come back. And he’s not showing any signs of going away. Questioning his own sanity, Jack finds his life spiraling out of control. But when a new acquaintance not only hooks him up with a drummer, but promises to help get rid of his ghostly stalker, Jack’s life does a one-eighty.

Drew MacLellan, the new drummer, is more than just a new set of sticks—he’s the brother of the insanely hot Jen MacLellan, who’s definitely not Jack’s biggest fan. Jen is nothing like the women Jack’s dated in the past, but the more he gets to know her, the deeper he falls. The only problem is she’s got a boyfriend. Caught between his growing attraction and the desire to do the right thing, Jack does everything he can to keep his distance. But the more he sees of her, the more he realizes he can’t. He’s determined to win Jen’s heart, if only he can figure out how to help his dead friend rest in peace…permanently.

About the Book

i-m-so-bad-at-paranormal-romance-you-don-t-even-know-by-jonathan-charles-bruceTitle: Improbables

Author: Jonathan Charles Bruce

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Abigail Wren’s new life fresh out of college is dull, even with her (almost) dream job at the local newspaper. The only real excitement she can get is found between the pages of an endless stream of paranormal romance novels she can’t help but love. Then, on a snowy night in December, Abigail catches a glimpse of what could only be described as a werewolf. Enamored with the possibility, her investigation leads her to discover a paranormal population—improbables—harmoniously living in the midst of humanity. Between making eyes at a perpetually grumpy werewolf and hanging out with a vampire with a lust for life (and liquor), Abigail’s life takes a shaky step out of the ordinary and into the fantastic. Just outside of the sleepy town of Whitewater, however, a force of rage is building. Born of hate and delusion, a living cataclysm threatens to devour everyone in its path—human or improbable.

Author Bio

Jonathan Bruce began writing what amounted to terrible Star Trek: The Next Generation fan fiction when he was four… provided that you accept that “forcing other people to write what he said” is the same thing as “writing”. Although the original manuscripts are lost (or perhaps destroyed), we can rest assured that his prose has improved significantly since then. After high school, he began writing and directing plays which gradually improved depending on whom you ask. He discovered his love of a good fight scene after writing a Dracula knock-off which took a 19th century classic and made it less about Victorian yearning and 300% more about stabbing things in the jugular. He has a Master’s Degree in History, thanks largely to his thesis focusing on MUSIC, a Milwaukee-based school desegregation campaign during the 1960’s. He also enjoys discussing/making fun of pop culture of the 20th century and reading books of a non-historical nature. In his off moments, you can catch him writing for fun or making inane movies about nothing in particular.

Book Review Timeshaft

9781513706887_cover FRONTTitle: Timeshaft

Author: Stewart Bint

Genre: Time Travel

By the twenty-seventh century, mankind has finally mastered time travel—and is driving recklessly towards wiping itself out. The guerilla environmentalist group WorldSave, with its chief operative Ashday’s Child, uses the Timeshaft to correct mistakes of the past in an effort to extend the life of the planet.

But the enigmatic Ashday’s Child has his own destiny to accomplish, and will do whatever it takes within a complicated web of paradoxes to do so. While his destiny—and very existence—is challenged from the beginning to the end of time, he must collect the key players through the ages to create the very Timeshaft itself.

“Do our actions as time travellers change what would otherwise have happened, or is everything already laid down in a predetermined plan?” he asks. Stewart Bint’s Timeshaft is an expertly synchronized saga of time travel, the irresistible force of destiny, and the responsibility of mankind as rulers of the world.

Time travel has always been difficult to grasp for me because there’s so much that comes into play. I understand it better now, since I finished reading Timeshaft. The plot was complex, with a lot of interwoven stories and as such really stood out from other time travel books I read. The characters were well-developed and intriguing.

It’s an extremely enjoyable book, with some great scenes, and some very entertaining characters.

Book Review Notes of Temptation

Author: Rebecca Halsey

Genre: Historical Romance

Hollywood Jazz, Book 1

When Carrie Cooper leaves her small gold-mining town to seek her fortune, it’s not until she arrives in L.A. that she learns her college certificate is a fraud. The only work available is in a less-than-respectable speakeasy.

The job comes with the opportunity to take the stage with Oz Dean, the club’s captivating bandleader. But rivals out for her blood along with her place in the spotlight lurk behind the curtain.

Oz Dean has the rare ability to “see” music as brilliant colors, but nothing has ever dazzled him like Carrie’s pure, choirgirl voice. With a mob debt hanging over his head like a guillotine, he organizes a revue that will launch them all to stardom. Unfortunately, his bold move attracts exactly the kind of criminal attention he’d like to avoid.

Mired in Hollywood’s underbelly, caught off-guard by their growing attraction, Carrie and Oz are forced to consider the cost of success. Or their one chance to make beautiful music together could be their last.

Carrie isn’t particularly Lucky. Her college certificate turns out to be a fraud, so instead of finding her fortune out on her own, she has to work as a speakeasy. The upside to this is that she gets to take the stage with Oz Dean, a charming bandleader with a rare ability. He sees music as colors, and he’s enamored with Carrie’s pure voice.

But with a mob debt hanging over his head, he’s not exactly the safest person to be around. If Carrie and Oz give in to temptation, it might put both of them in danger.

I loved the emphazises on music! The two characters were amazing, especially Oz. I really liked him, and enjoyed reading about his gift. The book is fast-paced, and the writing is great.
