“May I have my picture back, please?”
The soft, fearful not in her voice made him wince. He’d scared her. He clenched his hand around the photo. The smooth glass was cool to his touch, the wooden frame’s straight edge dug into his palm. He relaxed his grip and handed the photo over.
She snatched it up and took a step back. Out of range. Did she think he’d hit her? The thought made his skin crawl. He sank onto the sofa. “I’m sorry I barged into your room. I wasn’t thinking.”
“I accept your apology. I’m sorry I haven’t been completely honest about my relationship with your uncle.” She sat on a chair facing him. “It’s not entirely your business, though.”
He straightened.
Not his business?
“He’s my uncle.”
“And how does that make any of this your business?”
“Because—“ He cut himself off. She was right. It was none of his business. But damn if he didn’t really want to know.
