About the Book

riseofthesidenah_96Title: Rise of the Sidenah

Author: C.M. Story

Genre: YA Fantasy

Adrienna Vedica longs to build the creatures living in her imagination. One day, she hopes to sculpt them out of stone, creating great statues like those that guard the Celany village.

She doesn’t understand why everyone seems to disapprove.

It’s only when Tishaan, a powerful man in the high council, agrees to help her sculpt that Adrienna is finally able to pursue her passion. She dives into her work, but creates with such energy she collapses from exhaustion before seeing the final results, giving Tishaan time to hide her masterpieces away.

Her mentor, Sreng—the man she secretly loves—tries to convince her that Tishaan is using her, but she can’t abandon her art. Only when people start showing up dead does she think again. There’s something off about Tishaan…and then Sreng shows her one of her early works.

But something is wrong.

It’s alive. And it’s digging a grave.

Author Bio

C M StoryC.M. Story has always been a fan of fantasy in all its many forms, including the kind she frequently indulged in during boring lectures in school. She didn’t try her hand at penning her own stories, however, until long after she’d gotten her Bachelor’s degree in music.

Once she sold her first short story, she got a writing job and never looked back. Today she runs a successful freelance writing and editing business out of her home in Idaho, and frequently travels to other inspiring places with her trusty laptop in tow. And yes, despite rumors to the contrary, “Story” is her real last name.

“Rise of the Sidenah” was inspired by gothic architecture, a tune by “The Calling,” and the idea that following the heart may cause pain, but is the only way to truly fulfill one’s purpose in life.

I’m hosting a guest post today about a typical day of writing in the life of author Trev Brown. Please welcome the author. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us.

A typical day of writing

I feel that writing is an honourable vocation and not a vacation. Either you are a writer or you are not. As with any other honourable job you need to set yourself a start time and a ‘knock off’ time. As you are mainly self employed, you yourself get to set these times. Firstly, I take into consideration the climate. In a sub-tropical climate such as Queensland, I like to start early and finish early. In summer a six am start and work straight through to one pm. All I have is a couple of coffees along the way and then reward myself with a lunch as the temperature rises.

The writing process does not stop there because it is during the siesta period that you contemplate what you are going to write the next day. Sometimes I may jot down a few key ideas, but I feel it is important to move away from the computer, and do anything else, even housework.

In a more temperate climate I usually stay in bed a little longer, especially in winter. On average about three times a week, I take myself for a half hour walk half way through the morning. This is usually the extent of my exercise.

Presently I am not writing at all. I am building a self-contained dwelling on what I hope will be a self-sustaining farm so I can once again focus on my writing.

About the Book

Kellynch Book coverTitle: Kellynch

Author: Kwen D. Griffeth

Genre: Jane Austen Fanfiction / Romance

Jane Austen completed “Persuasion” in August 1816. It was to be her last book. She left us with the story of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth and she left them approaching “happily ever after.” What happens the day following “happily ever after?”

The story of Kellynch picks up three years after the couple married and were able to secure the Kellynch estate from Sir Walter and Cousin William Elliot agreed to waive the entailment.

It would seem all is well with the young couple, but all is not as it seems.

Kellynch is a story of deceit and treachery as well as courage and overcoming the odds. It is a story in which those who were assumed to be friends are not and where support comes from unexpected places. Love again, will, be tested in a story set against the backdrop of historical events.

Throughout the book, I have tried to remain true to the characters as Miss Austen created them. I sought to develop and introduce new characters that would meet with her approval.

Author Bio

Author PhotoWhen describing my life, I think Douglas Adams said it best, “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I have ended up where I needed to be.”

Books have always been a large part of my meandering.

I grew up on a ranch in southeastern Idaho and my friends were a mixed and rowdy bunch. Louis L’Amour told me tales of the west, but Edgar Rice Burroughs took me to the jungles of Africa. Sir Author Conan Doyle walked with me through the fog-covered streets of London, and Jane Austen taught me to be a gentleman.

I read several other authors but I was fourteen when I met the man. Sitting in an English class, I chose a book from a required reading list and I was introduced to Ernest Hemingway. His book, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” allowed Mister Hemingway, Robert Jordan, and I to fight in the Spanish Civil War and I never left Idaho. When I closed the back cover, I knew that no matter whatever else I did, I would be a writer. Even today, when I think back, I am still in awe of how Hemingway’s words touched the soul of an adolescent boy.

I entered the Army a year after high school and stayed in uniform for the next two decades. The military offered me the opportunity to live my own adventures separate from the ones I lived vicariously in books. While in uniform, I worked in a variety of fields, Infantry, Military Police, and Military Intelligence. I worked on a psychiatric ward and later at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. I took trips to Mexico, Canada, and twice to Germany. I have visited the forty-eight contiguous states and desperately want to see the other two.

Along the way, I met and kept printed friends Allister Maclean, Robert Ludlow, John Grisham, and Tom Clancy. I had flings with several others, Joseph Wambaugh, Clive Cussler, and Stephen King.

I started to write and failed. Repeatedly, I would start a story, only to end it and discard it as it sounded too much like the works of one of my friends. I went through periods when I refused to read, because I was frustrated and angry with those friends. Those friends who were what I wanted to be.

Fifteen years ago, I got sick. I got sick and it was misdiagnosed. I almost died, but then I met the doctor who figured out the riddle and, with his help, I started working my way back. As I got better and my brain got stronger, stories, characters, and plots started to form. I found my voice and I published my first book, a novella called “Dear Emma,” in February 2012.

I used to feel strange telling people, “I got better and now I hear voices,” but the statement is accurate. I feel I am in good company as several authors have made such references. As I said at the beginning, I am exactly where I need to be.

Book Review In Shadows Waiting

in-shadows-waiting-by-stewart-bintTitle: In Shadows Waiting

Author: Stewart Bint

Genre: Paranormal, Horror

Rating: A

Young Simon Reynolds lives a bucolic life at his family home, White Pastures, surrounded by a loving family and a charming community. Simon finishes his A levels and looks forward to unwinding while his sisters work on their tans.

Meanwhile the tiny community of Meriton has been plagued by a spate of burglaries, and White Pastures seems to be next. A shadowy figure stalks the house, but the police can find no signs of an intruder.

Inspired by the author’s real-life experience with the supernatural, In Shadows Waiting recounts a summer that changes the Reynolds’ lives forever. As the summer progresses, the shadows take on an altogether more sinister implication, and White Pastures begins to reveal a terrifying secret.

The epicenter of an event that has scarred an entire community, White Pastures grows more and more dark, possessed by a shadow that yearns, a shadow that will not be denied. At White Pastures, someone will die — but love never will.

In Shadows Waiting arrives just in time for Halloween. Simon Reynolds is a young man who lives in White Pastures, his family home, which becomes haunted by a shadowy figure during one summer that might change Simon’s life forever. His family home becomes tainted and Simon must face the fact the supernatural is real, and something wicked is out to hurt him and his family.

It’s an amazing book. I loved it. Creepy, sinister, and then I read that it’s based on the author’s real-life experience with the supernatural, and that made it all the more intriguing! A must read for Halloween season.

Book Excerpt

Allie paced her bedroom. “Angelo! I’m warning you. You better show your face, or I’ll come to Mulberry Street and hunt you down like the dog you are.”

“Take it easy, sugar. I was in a bath. Besides, you need a little cooling off for that Gweneviere crack.” Startled by his quick appearance, she watched him lean his buttocks against her window sill. His wet hair brushed his wide shoulders, sending droplets of water traveling down between his pectorals, over his defined abdomen, and disappearing beneath the thick towel he wrapped around his waist. His olive skin glistened, and she could smell his fresh ocean scent. Allie pinched herself, but he was still there. “Fairies take baths?”

“Does a witch fly on a broomstick?”

She cocked her head and then shook it. “What am I going to do? I know nothing about plants. I have a black thumb.” She motioned her hands up and down the length of her body. “There is nothing green. Anywhere.”

“Don’t worry. Do you panic like this every time you have a dilemma?”

Allie faced him with her hands on her hips. “No. I have a problem when my fairy godmother, who, by the way, looks like he could be the leader of a gang, likes to play dress up by putting me in a servant’s uniform and throwing me to the wolves.”

“If it were my game, the uniform you wore would’ve looked a whole lot different.” He winked.

“Great. I get the sarcastic godmother. Is there a way to trade you in?”

Angelo let out a loud sigh and pushed off the window sill. He got closer to her. “My job is to point you toward a happily ever after. It’s not to solve your problems or give you a quick fix for an already fucked up life. Got it?”

Allie crinkled her forehead and slowly shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I’m still questioning whether you’re real or if I’m in the midst of some psychotic break.”

He pulled her into his arms and tucked her head under his chin. “Does this feel real?”

She felt his heart beating against her and relaxed into his embrace. She let out a soft sigh. “Umm, yes,” she whispered. “You feel real. Can I ask you a question?”

“Shoot.”

“Is Angelo your real name?”

“No.”

She lifted her head and looked deep into his eyes. He gave her a half-smile and held her stare. She felt her muscles loosen and the stress drain from her fingertips. She leaned into him, pressing her breasts against his bare chest, and held him tighter. “I hadn’t noticed before, but the color of your eyes are the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. The green is just—” and before Allie could finish her sentence, Angelo was gone. She looked around her empty bedroom. Either this was really happening, or she was going completely crazy.

Book Review Nation of Enemies

Standard

Nation of EnemiesTitle: Nation of Enemies

Author: H.A. Raynes

Genre: Thriller

Rating: A

It’s all about the genetics. DNA. Black & white.

A decade ago the U.S. government mandated that all citizens be issued biochips containing all of their medical information and an ID number indicating a person’s health. Then they made the information public—the implications of which are wide-spread and devastating.

Now on the eve of the 2032 presidential election, the country is deeply divided and on the brink of civil war. But as the two major political parties face off, innocent Americans are dying at the hands of masked terrorists. When the Liberty Party’s presidential nominee is assassinated in a highly-coordinated, masterful attack, it sets off a chain of events that will change the course of history and leave America’s inalienable rights—life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—dangling on the precipice of extinction.

Wow. Just wow. Nation of Enemies is a non-stop action-packed rollercoaster set in a bleak and dreary future. In 2032, all people have a biochip that contains all their medical information and an ID number indicating their health. This created a whole new class-based system, with upper class being the healthiest individuals, and sick individuals are seen as lower class. With the country divided and on the brink of a civil war, and facing upcoming presidential elections, terrorists run wild, human rights are at stake, and it might be up to some lone individuals to save the day.

I enjoyed every single second of this. The author had a great concept and executed it wonderfully. An amazing read.
